ANNOUNCEMENT: Professor Sinno, Direct Actions, Book Club, and our Callout
A back-to-school update on our organization.
Welcome back organizers and supporters. We hope your break was restful, but the work continue. We have a lot planned this semester so stay tuned.
Brief Statement Professor Sinno
If you have not heard, the Indiana University administration has suspended professor Abdelkader Sinno from teaching and advising because of his involvement with the Palestine Solidarity Committee at IU (PSC). Sinno advises PSC and advises many other Arab and Muslim organizations on campus - to say nothing of the students he advises individually. His suspension followed our event that hosted outspoken Israel critic, Miko Peled on campus.
It should be clear to anyone watching that despite the IU’s stated justification of him being a bad influence on students, this was an act of retaliation for his role in promoting pro-Palestine organizing on campus. Despite Sinno’s tenured position the university violated its own procedures to punish him for his activism. Its clear this is a continuation of the nationwide attempts to silence pro-Palestinian organizing on college campuses. Professor Sinno’s suspension affects PSC’s ability to organize efficiently, and the resulting changes to course schedules has directly impacted our plans for the semester.
IU Faculty have already began to mobilize against this action with a petition.
Students and alumni have just launched their own petition. Sign it here!
There will be much more from our organization on this matter, so stay connected.
Direct Actions: Painting!
This Thursday, PSC will be hosting a bridge painting event to show our support for Palestine!
Dress for the weather and feel free to bring paint in the colors of the Palestinian flag!
Callout Meeting: Thursday
Come join us for our callout meeting where we will be discussing current events, the history of Palestine, and ways to get involved to help fight against colonial aggression.
We will be meeting next Thursday, January 18th at 7:30pm in SPEA 272.
Book Club
Last week, PSC held its first book club meeting which was a great success. We are currently reading sections of Ilan Pappe’s The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006) to study the history of political Zionism as the ideological foundation of the 1948 Nakba.
We have a form for those interested in participating and we are currently our next meeting. Stay connected for more information!
I am so sorry to hear of Prof Sinno’s suspension, although I’m sad to say I am not surprised. This University has never shown academic freedom to its faculty in any areas where it matters.
I wabt to join the bridge painting but am not sure when Thursday to show up
