ANNOUNCEMENT: First Book Club Meeting Next Wednesday
We'd like to invite everyone to our first book club meeting this Wednesday! We have selected our first text!
The Palestine Solidarity Committee would like to kick off our first book club meeting. This Wednesday at 6:30pm on Zoom. The goal is to meet every two weeks, but we will use when2meet to figure out a time for those interested!
Based on the form responses, there was a lot of interest in the history of the Nakba. To frame this history, we are going to first take a look at the ideology of Zionism. What are the origins of Zionism? How does it relate to Judaism? How did it relate to early European Jewish migration to Palestine? What did this political movement have to say about the Arabs living in Palestine before Israel?
The first text will be two chapters of The Ethnic Cleansing Of Palestine by Ilan Pape (2006)
Chapter 1: An ‘Alleged’ Ethnic Cleansing? (20-28)
Chapter 2: The Drive for an Exclusively Jewish State (29-48)
These chapters will will help us understand the ideology of Zionism laid the groundwork for the Nakba in 1948 - discussed more directly in the following book club meeting. A good supplementary text on Zionism is Norman Finkelstein’s review of Zionism and the Arabs, 1882–1948: A Study of Ideology by Yosef Gorny (1987) in chapter one of his book Image and Reality Of The Israel-Palestine Conflict (1995).
We will be coordinating our activity through email and through signal!
