On Jan. 15, a ceasefire deal was finally reached after 15 months of genocide against the people of Gaza. The ceasefire deal is almost identical to the deal accepted by Hamas in May, but rejected by Israel. The ceasefire officially began on Jan. 19, but Israel continued its cruelty three hours past the designated start time, killing 19 Palestinians who had returned home.
The first phase of the ceasefire will be a six-week period of exchanging hostages/prisoners on both sides. The second and third phases are to be negotiated during the first phase, but the ultimate goal is to work toward a permanent ceasefire.
While this is good news and will hopefully end the brutality, there are still signals that Israel will soon continue its onslaught. No matter what happens, it is still our duty to continue to fight for the liberation of Palestine, for divestment, and to never forget the atrocities Israel committed against innocent Palestinians for the last 15 months.
We will have more analysis soon, but in the meantime we mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living.
